When you think about orthodontics, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you’re like most people, it’s probably some version of a teenager in a full set of traditional metal braces. This has been a surprisingly persistent stereotype over the years! While a large percentage of our patients are teens, orthodontic treatment can actually benefit patients of all ages, including adults. In fact, over 25% of current orthodontic patients are 18 or older. That number only continues to grow, proving that you’re never too old to benefit from orthodontics! That’s why we’re debunking the most popular reasons for not getting adult braces.
If you’ve always been self-conscious about the way your teeth look or function, this is the perfect time to explore how RiverView Orthodontics can give you a beautiful, healthy smile. Our talented team offers patients a number of affordable treatment options, including traditional metal braces and clear braces. Today’s braces are more comfortable, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing than they’ve ever been, but some of our adult patients are still hesitant about using them to align their smiles. This is often based on common misconceptions or misinformation about this treatment method.
Have you thought about pursuing orthodontic treatment but aren’t sure if braces are right for you? Let’s take a look at some of the biggest myths surrounding adult braces and give you some insight into why they remain the most popular treatment option, year after year!
Myth #1: Braces are just for kids
As we mentioned above, many of our orthodontic patients are younger. However, more and more adults are starting to understand the link between oral health and total body health. This knowledge often results in a desire to take better care of their teeth and gums. This may mean seeking more regular dental care or looking into the benefits of orthodontic treatment!
Many adults have crooked teeth, misaligned jaws, and many other issues they’ve been waiting for years to correct. Some had treatment they never completed as a child, or have had their teeth shift through aging or improper retainer use. Others would simply like to improve their smile cosmetically! Whatever your reason for exploring orthodontic care as an adult, braces can give you the straighter smile you’ve always wanted.
Myth #2: Braces will make you more self-conscious
If you’re already prone to hiding your smile, the last thing you want is to draw more attention to it. You may think that getting braces will immediately make them the most noticeable thing about you, but the good news is, modern technology has given us multiple options to achieve a healthier smile! Here at RiverView Orthodontics, we’re proud to offer the following treatments to our patients.
Metal braces
Metal braces are one of our most popular and efficient treatments. They’re generally composed using a mix of stainless steel, nickel, and other high-quality metals, which makes the brackets very durable and long-lasting! Today’s metal braces are also much lighter, more efficient, and more comfortable than they used to be. You can customize them, too! You’ll be able to choose from a variety of fun colored elastics to match your personality, favorite team, the holiday season—the possibilities are endless!
Metal braces have a long track record of producing excellent results and can be particularly useful in cases that are more severe or complex. Since they don’t require some of the more complex technology or expensive equipment that newer treatments do, they also tend to be a slightly more affordable option.
Clear braces
You may hear clear braces referred to as ceramic braces, tooth-colored braces, or esthetic braces. While they function the same way metal braces do, clear braces also come with the benefit of semi-translucent or tooth-colored ceramic brackets, which are better able to blend in with a patient’s natural smile. This offers a more subtle straightening option for those who are more image-conscious, especially when the brackets are paired with clear, white, or tooth-colored wires and elastic ties.
Clear braces are just as tough as their metal counterparts, but the ceramic material they’re made from can be more prone to chipping or cracking. Metal braces may be a better choice for patients who require severe corrections since they can tolerate more pressure than clear braces. Clear brackets are often slightly more costly than metal brackets, as well. Because they can be more expensive and are slightly more prone to breaking, we generally tend to recommend clear braces to our older teen and adult patients.
Myth #3: Braces cost too much
There’s no doubt that orthodontic treatment of any kind is an investment of both your time and finances. The benefits can last you a lifetime, however! You never have to worry about any hidden costs or unexpected fees with our practice.
