Advancements in New Technology

Technology has been evolving for decades. From carriages to sports cars, carvings to digital books, computer rooms to phones small enough to fit in our pockets, life continuously changes with every discovery. We’re happy to say that orthodontic technology was not left out!

Advancements in technology have made orthodontic care quicker, more comfortable, and able to cover a broader range of patient needs. At RiverView Orthodontics, we embrace new technology to continue our goal of transforming patients’ lives—one smile at a time.

Invisalign

For good reasons, the Invisalign company has become a household name in recent years! They offer clear aligners for children, teens, and adults who don’t require heavy-duty braces for their smile goals.

Clear aligners are translucent trays that straighten teeth over time by applying pressure. The trays are worn for one to two weeks before moving to the next trays in the set, and patients can have their final results in as little as six months! Invisalign’s custom-made trays offer a snug fit and nearly invisible appearance when worn, perfect for those who want a more discreet orthodontic treatment.

Because aligners are removable, Invisalign offers patients the best of both worlds. They can straighten their teeth without food restrictions or altering their oral hygiene routine, and most people will not even realize they are in treatment. Using X-rays and scans of the mouth, orthodontists can spot potential complications before treatment begins, giving patients a comfortable and convenient experience as they achieve their goals.

Our team at RiverView Orthodontics is thrilled to provide Invisalign for qualified patients.

Clear Braces

Clear braces, also known as ceramic braces, are not clear. They are tooth-colored braces that blend in with the teeth, giving the illusion of “clear” braces. Despite their name, ceramic braces are made of a very durable polycrystalline ceramic material. Clear braces are perfect for people who might not be a good fit for Invisalign but still want a more subtle look than traditional metal braces! Our office is a proud provider of In-Ovation clear braces, offering users comfort and stain resistance. In-Ovation braces are self-litigating, which means they have a built-in tool to hold the wire in place. They don’t need the ligatures (the color bands) you see on traditional braces, adding to their discreet look.

Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)

Temporary Anchorage Devices entered the US orthodontic world in roughly 2005 but had been used prior in other countries. TADs are small pieces of titanium metal used in addition to braces anchored into the mouth to help quickly and efficiently move the teeth with less discomfort. Unfortunately, some patients’ treatment needs might cause unwanted movement to the back teeth. Previously, patients would be required to wear headgear to stop this shifting, but TADs are a smaller, more discreet option. The best part is TADs are low-maintenance, meaning the patient only needs to keep their mouth clean.

i-CAT FLX Cone Beam 3D Imaging System

At RiverView Orthodontics, the health of our patients matters beyond their teeth. That is just one of the reasons we have opted for the i-CAT FLX Cone Beam 3D Imaging System. This machine allows our experienced team to get quick, comfortable, and precise imaging of your mouth — while using less radiation than other machines. Dr. Upton then uses these detailed images to give patients the most accurate orthodontic diagnosis possible. The scan can take as little as 8 seconds and give Dr. Upton 3D information for TMJ treatment, airways and sleep apnea assessments, orthodontic evaluation and planning, and full facial and jaw imaging. We are the only office in Tuscaloosa with this device and are proud to share it with our patients.

Ni-Ti Wires

Ni-Ti wires, made of Nickel and Titanium, have begun replacing stainless steel as the standard. Due to their shape memory feature, they have the ability to return to their original shape when exposed to certain temperatures. Because they naturally tighten in response to the heat in the mouth, this allows them to create continuous pressure on the teeth to move them in the right direction. Ni-Ti wires make the overall treatment time of braces shorter and more comfortable because you will have fewer wire-tightening appointments.
